John N. Thompson was born in 1864 at Plattsburg, New York. He graduated from the Academy of Mount St. Vincent in New York City in 1887 and entered the service of the New York Gas Light Company as Secretary to the Superintendent
In 1890 he became Assistant General Manager of the Gas Light Company and was promoted to General Manager in 1894. He served as Secretary to the President of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company from 1890 to 1896, when he became President of that company. Under his administration, the Lehigh Valley Railroad experienced phenomenal growth and increased its capitalization tenfold.
Thompson retired from active duty in 1900 and devoted his attention to manufacturing interests which he owned in New Jersey and at Stelton, New Jersey. He died on February 16, 1932 at his home in Morristown, New Jersey.
